Innovation

One word regularly crops up when people refer to DMM apart from 'Quality' and that is 'Innovation'. Innovation has been central to DMM's philosophy and outlook and one of the most important factors that has driven the company forward for nearly three decades.

Not only have we been true innovators when it comes to product, but also when it comes to how to make that product. Consider some of the ground breaking products which we introduced to the market and which have become the standard to which others aspire.

Cast your mind back 14 years or more when the Mamba burst on the scene; a hot forged, captive draw that was massively strong and had an easy clipping bent gate - this product was THE sports climbing draw for nearly a decade.

What about the Prowire? 36 grams a few years ago was unbelievably light, especially since it also raised the stakes by having an 8kN gate open. Amazingly it is still considered a very good carabiner by today's standards, and compares well to most other brands premium product.

Ice tool design was irrevocably changed after the introduction of the Predator Ice Axe. At the time it was the first fully curved shaft on a technical tool; indeed it was so futuristic that it took us a while to persuade people of its value and advantages. Now all technical tools are bent....

Crampon design too was turned on its head by the Terminator, the world's first fully asymmetrical crampon. It is still going strong after 12 years - truly remarkable when most other top end crampons have a life of 2 or 3 seasons.

Wirelocks were then developed to fill the gap for a clean nose wiregate.

This was closely followed by the Helium, that we make for Wild Country, and the (updated wirelock) Shield. These also utilise the I-beam hot forging that we developed to reduce weight and maximize strength. Thus both these 34g biners have a clean nose wire gate combined with a back that that achieves 10kn gate open. Still nobody else can do this.

Revolvers remain the only biner in the world to incorporate a fully certified pulley in the bottom end to help reduce rope drag/friction.

The Rebel and Anarchist ice tools are the world's only fully forged Ice tools. They use the I Beam technology we developed with biners to bring more control over how the axe feels and its centre of gravity.

Most recently we have brought to the market place the strongest, lightest biner in the world. The Phantom at 26 grams is now the target for others to aim at. We achieved this without compromise on strength either as this biner achieves a stunning 9 kn gate open rating.

Perhaps a confirmation of our position as market leaders is that other leading brands such as Petzl and Mammut have asked us to help bring products to life for them. Thus the new range of I-beam biners from Mammut are made by DMM.
